Often with dentistry- patient’s fear the unknown. When I have patient’s come in with a toothache, the appointment is often over within 30 minutes. They are out of pain…and somewhat surprised.
“Wow! you didn’t even have to get on my chest and tug at my tooth! That’s amazing!”
or…
“Wow! I didn’t even feel that needle… my friend told me to expect a big jabbing needle!”
Often we are skewed by many misconceptions or myths. And it’s these misconceptions that may limit us in having dental treatment. Let me use the field of orthodontics as an example to start setting the record straight…
The following information is provided by the American Association of Orthodontists.
MYTH: Braces are for kids.
FACT: One in five orthodontic patients is an adult.
MYTH: Braces are painful and take two years or more for the desired result.
FACT: After the adjustment period, like breaking in a new pair of shoes, braces are comfortable. Some may be worn for months, not years. Braces can be on for as short as 6 months.
MYTH: Signals from braces link to the Internet to download songs onto an iPod.
FACT: This is not possible right now.
MYTH: Braces are ugly, call attention to themselves and would be embarrassing in business settings.
FACT: Today’s braces may be nearly invisible (Invisalign), made from ceramic, or unseen, mounted on the back (lingual) side of the teeth.
MYTH: I only want my front teeth fixed, but I was told I MUST get all my teeth banded up in braces.
FACT: Braces can be bonded independently of the upper or lower jaw. That is, we can align only your upper teeth (or lower teeth), and/or can align only your front 6 teeth if you so desire to straighten up the area of concern… and yes that does make treatment cheaper too.
MYTH: Is it ever too late for braces?
FACT: No.
